Apple Flea Beetle (Altica foliaceae) LeConte 1858 |
Altica foliaceae is widely distributed in temperate North America from southern Canada to Mexico; likely a complex of species. These are small (4-6mm) metallic green or blue-green flea beetles. Adults overwinter and emerge in early spring; they are strong fliers and disperse widely; readily jump if disturbed. Preferred hosts are some species of the Onagraceae (Oenothera, Epilobium, and Gaura spp.), although adults also feed on leaves of Rosaceae (e.g., Malus and Prunus spp.), Vitaceae, and Salicaceae (Salix). Identification of Altica beetles to species, from photographs, is problematic.
